MAXILLARY SINUS LIFT
Insufficient bone height and width in the back of the upper jaw prevents the placement of dental implants. The maxillary sinus lift procedure consists of lifting up the membrane of the maxillary sinus to allow a bone graft to be placed on the floor of the sinus. An onlay bone graft is usually placed along the side of the sinus floor at the same time. Therefore, the height and the width of the upper jaw bone are increased so as to support dental implants. A healing period of 5-6 months is required before implants can be inserted.
The procedure is performed under sedation within an office setting. The procedure requires 1.5 hours per side. Harvesting the bone graft from the mandibular ramus or cranium is performed during the procedure. A soft diet is recommended for 7-10 days, and patients usually return to work in 1 week.
