ONLAY BONE GRAFTING (Maxilla and Mandible)
The ridge of the maxilla or mandible (the portion of the jaw bone on which the teeth sit) may be insufficient to support dental implants. Onlay bone grafting involves adding a piece of bone taken from the mandibular ramus in order to increase the width of the ridge. The added bone is firmly fixed to the ridge by screws, which are removed at the time of implant placement 4 months later.
Onlay bone grafting is usually 1.5 hours long and is performed under sedation within an office setting. Harvesting the bone graft from the mandibular ramus is performed during the procedure. A soft diet is recommended for 7-10 days, and patients usually return to work in 1 week.
